Leadership message

Every day, we are guided and inspired by our purpose: we are united in our responsibility to create healthier futures. Together, we move health forward and positively impact communities around the world.

It’s been another incredible year of accomplishments for AmerisourceBergen, especially thanks to the efforts of our team members around the world committed to transforming the future of healthcare. I am incredibly grateful to be part of such an amazing organization and continue to be inspired — but never surprised — by our team members’ passion and shared commitment.

Our purpose compels us to do well by doing good, which unequivocally shapes our journey and impact to advance environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives. This work is embedded in all that we do as an organization, and we’re excited for the opportunity to share our progress and reinforce our future commitments through our Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) reporting in our microsite and reporting index.

We fulfill our commitment to ESG through key strategic areas: purpose-driven team members, resilient and sustainable operations, and healthy communities.

Purpose-driven team members

Our team members are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to fostering a global workplace that values diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by creating pathways for every team member to thrive and contribute. Our talent strategy, expanded benefits, and other people-related efforts all center on how to best care for our diverse workforce and strengthen a global culture that values unique voices and experiences.

We continued to advance our talent strategy on a global scale to create a more unified experience across the enterprise through our integrated talent framework, which is based on our leadership competency model focused on inclusion, collaboration, and innovation. To empower our team members’ voices, we increased the number of manager and team member check-ins during the year and emphasized well-being as part of those discussions to ensure we are better supporting our team members holistically. This year, we also launched our enterprise-wide Employee Experience survey in 22 languages to better measure cultural inclusion, team member satisfaction, and engagement across our global network. We have already created or enhanced our strategies to align with the feedback of our team members, and we’ll continue to use their insights as a guiding force.

Our team members also directly contribute to our ESG and community impact efforts by selflessly giving their time, talent, or personal resources. This year, our most successful matching gifts campaign supported aid to Ukraine. Together with our AmerisourceBergen and Alliance Healthcare team members representing 30 countries, we collectively donated over $225,000 to organizations including Direct Relief, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund at Global Giving. Additionally, to demonstrate our steadfast commitment to our ESG priorities, we are incorporating new ESG metrics into the executive compensation program for FY23 that align with the three pillars of our ESG strategy.

Resilient and sustainable operations

Phoenix Solar 1

Our trusted impact and reach as a global healthcare company enables us to demonstrate our commitment to resilient and sustainable operations, as well as help to shape what that looks like for customers, partners, and stakeholders across our broader industry.

In addition to aligning to our purpose of creating healthier futures and providing equitable access to all, our role as a purpose-driven organization is critical to addressing environmental challenges that impact our world. With a significant global footprint, we recognize the importance of a thoughtful approach to responsible supply chain operations to minimize our impact on the planet. I’m profoundly inspired by the steps we’ve taken to address climate issues on a global scale. More specifically, we set an enterprise-wide near-term science-based target that has been validated by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). We also joined the Health Sector Climate Pledge through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and participated in an inaugural event at the White House to discuss actions to address climate change. Additionally, Alliance Healthcare UK has pledged to become net carbon zero by 2030 for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions within their operations.

Our commitment to engaging diverse suppliers supports a resilient supply chain by expanding our footprint, driving greater innovation, and further stimulating the economy.

Healthy communities for all

Across our AmerisourceBergen family of companies, we believe in giving back to our communities with a special focus on causes that address health equity and ensure continuity of care. We are proud of our work to reduce disparities in healthcare with efforts such as diversifying clinical trials and making participation more accessible for patients, as well as deploying mobile units to help with routine medical tests.

One of the most special areas of my role at AmerisourceBergen is serving as the President of the AmerisourceBergen Foundation, the independent not-for-profit charitable arm of our organization. Since its establishment in 2014, our efforts have been at the forefront of positively impacting global health. Over the past several years, we have continued to evolve and elevate the way we uplift communities, support underserved populations, and empower our nonprofit partners who are driving sustainable impact in countries and regions across the globe. Notably, we expanded our Foundation’s focus on mental health and convened numerous partners and industry leads to discuss ending the stigma and building trust in community health programming. By holding meaningful conversations on critical topics like this one, we can — and will — continue taking actionable steps to create long-term systemic change.
